Description
This antique Chinese Qing Dynasty Imperial Court ancestor scroll portrait came from an estate sale--the owner had spent decades running companies in China and Southeast Asia. (See my other listing for more amazing treasures.) This lovely portrait is painted on fine silk, not paper. The top has writing in seal script, but I can't read it, and also has gold sprinkles. The portrait looks very much likeEmpress Xiaoxianchun, the first Empress (1711-1748) of the Qianlong Emperor, the daughter of Lirongbao, as depicted in a scroll now at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She married the future emperor in 1727 under the reign on his father Yongzheng who died in 1735.
This is a magnificent portrait featuring a noble figure clad in ornate silken robes and seated upon a golden throne. Outstanding hand painting and attention to detail, from the sumptuous dragon brocades adorning the brilliant blue costume, to the bold floor tiles, and the three dimensional carved throne, all very intricate. Gorgeous, vibrant coloration as well with a beautiful imperial yellow ground. Of significant size, mounted with silk borders, the overall scroll measures approximately 63" long and 23" wide. Likely dates to the late 1800's or early 1900's and in very good antique condition with just minor wear commensurate with age (see white mark on face, and some creases on underlayment.) A superb ancestor scroll for the collector of fine Chinese art and antiques.
I can't authenticate this scroll so have taken very careful pictures. Please look them over carefully. Ancestor paintings like this were produced in the Court or Palace Workshops after 1735. The subject's formal
