We are proud to offer only
Genuine Premium Grade Stag
, not to be confused with lesser quality materials more commonly available today such as “Elk Stag” (see below for details).
Our Genuine Stag has been carefully hand selected from genuine Premium Grade stock for color, hardness, density, and appearance.
Much of it comes from vintage stock, which is getting more and more difficult to source.
You will note that some of our grips have already started to develop an outstanding, aged patina, which Genuine Stag is known for.
“Elk Stag”, which is not a true stag and is actually and more properly referred to as “elk antler”, is much more porous, lighter, and does not age or develop the mellow, creamy aged color and patina that true stag is known for.
Due to excessive porosity and penetrability, these materials tend to darken to a “dirty brown” color, and degrade and weaken over time.
With time and use, they tend to lose their color, appearance, and structural stability due to excessive soaking of oils, water vapor, and other contaminants.
Genuine Stag is denser, heavier, and will NOT deteriorate with age and use.
A genuine stag grip, hand selected from premium materials, will be around for centuries.
The more it is handled and used, the better it looks.
For a faster development of an aged patina, an occasional coating of oil (neatsfoot oil or standard mineral oil) will enhance its looks and appearance, and over time create the beautiful creamy aged patina sought after by stag collectors and aficionados.
Please note: grip screws not included.
Each grip is hand checked by a grip specialist for proper fit on our factory reference frame prior to shipping.
Occasionally, minor fitting may be required if your bushings are slightly out of proper tolerance (usually a couple of strokes with a file in the screw holes (.005" or thereabouts) due to minor variations in the stud placement tolerances).
We are here to help with any questions.
