    Description

    This is an interesting vintage
    printer's block plate
    , a
    halftone image
of a famous photograph of British soldiers of
No.4 Commando at Newhaven with a German prisoner
they had captured at a gun battery at Varengeville, France, during the disastrous
    Dieppe Raid
of 1942. The metal printing plate is attached to a heavy block of wood. Overall, the block plate measures approximately 4-5/8" square and is in good condition, with ink staining of the wood and light scratches on the metal printing plate. I presume the plate was used in the printing of a book, but do not know for sure. Please see photos for details, and note that one of the photos of the plate has been "negatized" and increased in contrast to show what the image would look like printed on paper.
